The effectiveness and efficiency of environmental regulators and law enforcement is critical to maintain public confidence and trust in the regulatory system. When public trust and confidence is high, governments, industry, and the environment enjoys a more sustainable and certain future. Empowering and learning from first peoples is critical to deliver whole of country outcomes and deliver environmental law objectives.

This Summit is an action-orientated event aimed to facilitate and strengthen worldwide collaboration and support for regulatory practitioners who implement and enforce environmental law, making them more efficient and effective. The Summit will also grow our global capability to solve complex regulatory and law enforcement problems together.

Participants of the Summit will replicate and disseminate best practice approaches and tools designed for the effective implementation of environmental laws, exercising the environmental rule of law, levelling the playing field for businesses, and environmental governance within their ministries or organisations upon returning home.

Summit themes & topics

The headline theme is indigenous voice in environmental law and regulation. The Summit will be opened and closed by indigenous keynote speakers who will inspire us on empowering, enabling and learning from first peoples to get whole of country and environmental outcomes. The event will build better connections across the whole regulatory system from policy makers to implementers. It will significantly advance our collective regulatory capability and practice in a series of universally shared cross cutting topics including:

  • Indigenous voice in environmental law and regulatory practice
  • Public participation, stakeholder engagement and citizen science in regulation
  • Good law design for implementers
  • Use of artificial intelligence and technologies in advanced monitoring, detection and assessment
  • Local actions to deliver regional and landscape outcomes
  • Protecting environmental defenders – health and safety for regulatory staff
  • Regulatory assurance, organisational maturity and practitioner capability – maintaining integrity and resilience of the whole regulatory system

The Summit will enable worldwide collaboration and growth in regulatory practice across four specific subjects:

  1. Climate change & air quality
  2. Emerging waste streams
  3. Biodiversity regulation, wildlife crime, protected areas, and land management
  4. Natural resources management (water, fisheries, vegetation, soil, and forestry), and regulating energy and resources (renewables, clean energy, mining, and on-shore and off-shore gas and oil)
