Building and maintaining public trust and confidence is critical to becoming a mature, efficient and effective regulator. It is increasingly a statutory objective for many regulatory agencies, and the regulator being perceived as ‘captured’ carries with it the threat of losing its integrity, posture and effectiveness to regulate industry and the regulated community.
Understanding the risk regulatory capture poses and practical ways to mitigate it therefor becomes critical for regulators in the effort to improve understanding and engagement among the communities they regulate and the delivery of outcomes in the broader public interest.

These regulatory capture workshops will be facilitated and run by RECAP Consultants with support from key AELERT member leaders and the AELERT leadership team. These workshops were triggered by regulatory leaders in Tasmanian agencies with the intent to grow our collective capabilities by equipping staff and peer leaders with specialized skills to safeguard themselves and the agencies they represent.
These events are sponsored and organized by AELERT and key Tasmanian member agencies for their people. Follow up actions to consolidate learnings and keep good regulatory practice alive will be driven and led by the AELERT leadership team.
These workshops follow similar regulatory capture workshops held in Adelaide in 2023 for AELERT members.
