The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) has launched its First Nations Strategy 2025-2030. The Strategy represents the department’s deep commitment to:
- incorporating the expertise, experiences and aspirations of First Nations people into the delivery of policy, program and regulatory work
- creating a culturally supportive environment for First Nations employees
- aligning work with the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
The Strategy aims to transform how the department delivers on government priorities across climate change, energy, the environment, heritage and water. This transformation means putting Country at the heart of its operations and rethinking engagement, collaboration and function.
The Strategy builds on the department’s Statement of Commitment to First Nations people and highlights the actions that will be undertaken as an organisation to progress reconciliation within its workplace by 2030.
Implementation is planned to occur over two stages: a Foundations stage (2025-2026) focused on creating a foundation of capability for the way the department works with and for First Nations people, and an Embedding stage (2026-2030) that will see leveraging foundational capabilities to achieve outcomes laid out in the Strategy.
The Strategy was developed through extensive consultation with staff across Australia, including dedicated workshops with First Nations staff and advice from our department’s Indigenous Advisory Committee.
